Blake is hired to rip off some drug dealers which he does but Styles is there and has his gun trained on Blake. When Blake grabs a hostage, Styles out wits him and arrests him. Blake would be sent to prison. Because someone with a video camera was there, Styles is all over the media and touteda hero. Styles would then be promoted to detective and a few years later would join the D.A.'s office. Blake only thinks of one thing, getting back at Styles. Seven years later at his parole hearing Blake tries to escape and is killed or so they think. Blake tries to make Styles appear to be crooked. And when he reveals himself to Styles, and when he lets Styles go, and Styles tells everyone about Blake, they all think he is crazy. And when Blake frames him, Styles resorts to a desperate act to prove his innocence.
In this action thriller, Denzel Washington plays Nick Styles, the assistant district attorney of L.A. The film opens in his early daysa cop on the L.A.P.D. During a carnival, master criminal Earl Talbot Blake creates a scene after a botched drug deal. Styles and Blake confront each other, during which Blake is wounded by Styles and later sent to prison. Seven years later, Blake escapes from prison during a parole board hearing to carry out his revenge against Styles, and what follows is a violent series of events that destroys Styles' career. This sets the stage for one last bloody duel between Styles and Blake.
There are some features that it's best you don't think too much about, but simply go with it and enjoy the over-the-top ride. "Ricochet" is one of those films. It's quite an eye-rolling, but barnstorming action thriller starring Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Kevin Pollack, Lindsay Wagner and Ice Cube. No cliché is left untouched in the plot developmentsthe criminal that was put-away goes after the cop, now district attorney that put him there, but his revenge is to see this man become tainted and slowly succumb to a downward spiral. Both were rookies in their chosen profession, but only one could hit stardom. The way it's all orchestrated is contrived in its manipulation, where success and satisfaction is gained from one's failure. It's the two leads that bring it up to par. A classy Washington oozes with confidencethe district attorney, while the icy Lithgow is left off the leash in the villain role. No holding back here… performance, but also the outlandish plot. For most part it sets up building upon the situation, like a dynamite waiting to explode. Director Russell Mulcahy's stylised handling is expansive, noisy and industrious with a real eye for mean-spiritedness and biting humour amongst its stagy set-pieces. Daft, but fun thriller hokum. <br/><br/>"I've been following your career, you know."
The Problem Here is Tone. It Wanders and Waivers at the Drop of a Profanity. The Movie is Vile and Then Cute and Cuddly. There are Individual Set Pieces that are Effective and Brutal and There are Scenes that are Cringe Inducing, Like a Switch of Allegiance with a Backstory that is Barely Hinted and Does Not Ring True.<br/><br/>Denzel Washington and John Lithgow are the Right Actors in the Right Roles but are Betrayed by the Lame Script, Inept Storytelling, and a Style that is Pedestrian. <br/><br/>It can be a Guilty Pleasure for Sure, but that Only Reinforces the Mishandling of the Material and a Result of Rubbernecking at Powerful Actors being Prostituted for Cheap Thrills. Kevin Pollak is Wasted in a Sleepwalking Role.<br/><br/>The Movie Works at Times but Unravels So Often it is a Frustrating Film that Never Finds its Legs and is Herky-Jerky the Way it Fluctuates its Presentation. The Third-Act is the Worst of the ThreeCharacters Betray Their Previous Personas and Become Cattle Herded Into the Slaughterhouse for a Cheesy Conclusion.<br/><br/>Yes, the Whole Movie is Cheesy but NotSmellythe Completely Clunky Ending.
